A Test Analyst plans and conducts a wide range of quality control tests and analyses to ensure all application products and services meet organizational standards and end-user requirements. All Test Analysts perform test planning, test design and test execution.  While the primary focus of the test analyst is tests and reviews that are focused on the quality of products and services themselves, an analyst in this role is also asked to identify waste, efficiencies and improvements in the testing processes.

A Test Analyst plans and conducts a wide range of quality control tests and analyses to ensure all application products and services meet organizational standards and end-user requirements.  Test Analysts analyze and perform risk assessments on requirements and map requirements to tests.  They prioritize, define and manage defect reporting and track defect metrics.  All Test Analysts perform test planning, test design and test execution.

A large portion of the assignments for this role may involve maintenance and upgrades.  It is expected that an individual in this role will find opportunities for efficiencies in testing for the upgrades in order to reduce the cost of those upgrades, which occur on a regular basis.  The Test Analyst should be able to identify opportunities to leverage test automation for efficiencies as well.

Test Analyst must be an enthusiastic collaborator and energized by working closely with peers and business partners as part of a cross-functional, co-located team. Test Analyst must build and maintain strong working relationships, offer and seek candid feedback, and value the success of the team as much as individual recognition.

Test Analyst must be able to propose and advocate for appropriate test solutions based on project constraints and inputs from multiple stakeholders with minimal supervision. Successful candidates are self-motivated, focus on execution, prepare rigorously, have an informed opinion, and assume accountability for the quality of the solution delivered.

Test Analyst must be skilled at analyzing and extracting data using SQL, ETL tools and/or spreadsheets. Test Analyst must have demonstrated experience in writing and reviewing technical specifications.

A Test Analyst may be asked to perform some or all of the following:

Analyzes and reviews requirements and technical work products

Defines and manages test plans, strategies, results reporting and metrics

Designs test scenarios, scripts and data, then executes the scripts

Validates test results and records and researches defects

Coordinates and plans test runs and calendars

Maps requirements to tests and test results

Prioritizes, defines and manages defect reporting and resolution

Plans and coordinates testing environment and needs

Analyzes functional and nonfunctional requirements and selects and prioritizes appropriate testing approaches that mitigate risks and issues and are consistent with project goals, acceptance criteria and available resources

Identifies, documents, creates and maintains valid and invalid test data needed to execute tests as designed

When asked to be a project test lead, performs quality control role on program/project delivery

Plans for and coordinates use of tools to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of testing

Applies testing technique knowledge to design specific test scenarios that ensure proper test coverage and depth

Creates test scripts or other technical work products needed to implement the test design

Identifies and acquires other assets needed for testing, such as environments, load generation, etc.

Executes tests using appropriate tools to enhance test effectiveness and efficiency

Maintains complete and accurate records of test execution and results

Analyzes test results then reports on the quality and readiness of a solution to be implemented into production

Identifies and records defects with proper classification

Performs root cause analysis to identify the location of defects

Validates that defects have been fixed

Uses metrics and analysis techniques to illustrate test results

Recommends software and project modifications as appropriate
