Re: {PBJFlorida} Digest for pbjflorida@googlegroups.com - 8 Messages in 6 Topics

AA Sister Matsuma, no, I had not seen this. This is sickening. It is fortunate it was not 15 min later or everyone would have been in the building for suhoor (prayer and breakfast prior to dawn and start of fast during Ramadan). Please don't let it be some group hateful over the donations, Joplin desperately needs them. One of the supervisors at the Home Depot there was killed saving a mother and her kids at our store there, getting them to safety and knowingly sacrificing himself.

You are right, also, Br. Miguel, that the community has done better than normal in speaking out after the incident in Wisconsin. It is sad that the Sikh community has suffered due to the misguided emotions of a few, on both sides. Most people do not know that there has been a large, healthy Sikh community in the Midwest, esp. Iowa, for over a 100 years. They came over as they are expert farmers and agricultural managers at the turn of the last century, and it as been a peaceful existence.

If anyone is planning on attending iftar (fast breaking supper) or any event at either AMCC, ISCF, or Jama, know they have all added security and stepped up safety issues to insure all attendees are safe as possible. As always, anyone is welcome at the iftar meals, you do not have to be a fasting Muslim. In fact, they welcome anyone willing to come and share and be open minded, and the meals are always wonderful.

Thank you for sending this Sr. Masuma! I did hear about it.

It is disgusting to see the increased hatred toward such peaceful religions as Sikhism and Islam, especially during the Muslim month of Ramadan. What next, Hinduism and Buddhism? My prayers go out to you.

I also want to acknowledge how sympathetic, empathetic, and supportive the Muslim community has been toward the Sikhs during their ordeal with the Milwaukee shootings this week.

As a Christian brother, I stand with all of you.

UMAA Condemns Attack on Islamic Center of Joplin, MO

The Universal Muslim Association of American (UMAA) expresses strong concern over the course of events that are taking place in the United States this week. Specifically, a few days after an attack on a Sikh religious center, The Islamic Center of Joplin, Missouri was destroyed in a fire. The community has created a Facebook page to help coordinate donation efforts and to provide information about the current progress of the investigation:http://www.facebook.com/TheIslamicSocietyOfJoplin

Carl Junction Fire Department and the Jasper County Sheriff's Department responded to the fire at about 3:40 a.m. after it was reported by people driving past. The building, which was empty at the time of the fire, sustained a total loss, the FBI said. The fire has been ruled to be an arson, meaning that it was an intentional attack on the mosque. Authorities also indicated that this was the second fire based attack on the mosque this month.
The Islamic Society's religious leader, Imam Lahmuddin, told the Joplin Globe that worshippers were in the mosque until about 11:20 on Sunday night, and were planning to be back for 5 a.m. prayer on Monday. Muslims are observing the month of Ramadan, which involves fasting from dawn until sunset each day. During Ramadan, many Muslims gather to break the fast in the evenings and pray at the mosque more frequently.
"We just take this as a test from God. God is testing us. This is the month of Ramadan. We are fasting. We are not supposed to get angry, we are not supposed to say anything bad," he said. "But that's not only for this month, but for every day of our lives. In Ramadan we are more careful in guarding our tongues, not to say anything inappropriate."
The atack represents an unusual turn from Muslim overtures to the citizens of Joplin. Representatives from the United Arab Emirates Embassy in Washington, D.C., in August announced an initial donation of $500,000 toward the local school district's plan to provide laptop computers this year to all Joplin High School students in response to the devastating Tornado that hit Missouri last year.
Most recently, there was also a donation of $5 million to Mercy Hospital from Muslims in the Middle East, also to help the city rebuild after the damage from the tornado.
UMAA calls upon the FBI and all federal law enforcement agencies to declare this attack on the mosque as a hate crime, and to utilize all resources to bring the perpetrators to justice.

    Why UMAA?

The overarching objectives of UMAA include: working towards uniting Muslim-Americans, helping fellow Americans better understand Islam, and encouraging civic awareness and engagement within the Muslim community.

    Your Feedback!

Please fill out the convention survey to give us your feedback. We value your comments and suggestions. Stay tuned for the UMAA video to be uploaded online as well as announcing next year's convention.

    *Dear (Contact First Name),*

I am writing you out of concern for thousands of farm workers who labor in
the tobacco fields of North Carolina and the South. I invite you as a
person of faith to add your name to the attached "Open Letter by Religious
Leaders to Mr. Daniel Delen, CEO of Reynolds American Inc.(RAI) and the RAI
    Board of Directors."

Many of you have appealed to RAI previously; and we greatly appreciate the
support that helped bring about an initial meeting on June 5th between Farm
Labor Organizing Committee President Baldemar Velasquez and. Martin Holman
III, RAI Executive Vice President and General Counsel.

Now that RAI is meeting with FLOC, we are calling on Reynolds American to
work with FLOC to develop a written agreement establishing a process
guaranteeing freedom of association and collective bargaining for tobacco
farm workers in the Reynolds American supply chain. In this way, Reynolds
American will affirm the authentic voices of the tobacco farm workers,
address common concerns, identify and work toward eliminating abuses in the
supply chain, and ultimately improve the living and working conditions of
    these farm workers.

Although Reynolds American, one of the largest tobacco companies in
the US,does not directly employ tobacco farm workers, by contracting
    with tobacco
growers, Reynolds establishes standards which directly affect the living
and working conditions of tobacco farm workers, both within its supply
    chain and even beyond.

Join other people of faith around the US and sign on to this Open Letter -
letting Reynolds American know that you care about tobacco farm workers.

Gratefully, Virginia Nesmith, NFWM Executive Director

    Mr. Daniel Delen

    President and CEO

    Reynolds American Inc.

    401 North Main St.,

    Winston-Salem, NC 27101

    Dear Mr. Delen:

    Greetings.

We are religious leaders from many diverse faith traditions who have a
common belief that all persons are created in the image of God and share a
    commitment to these principles:

    - The intrinsic value of all people to meaningful employment, an
    adequate income and livable wage;
    - The rights of workers to organize for their own safety, job security
    without the fear of harassment, discrimination or job loss;
    - The rights of all people to decent health care, adequate housing , and
    education;
    - The rights of working people to self-empowerment by having a seat at
    the decision-making table; and
    - Justice for farm workers who are some of the most vulnerable workers
    in our society.

We are writing you because you are the President and CEO of Reynolds
American Inc. (RAI), one of the largest producers of tobacco products in
the US. We understand that your Company has begun meeting with the Farm
Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) to discuss issues relating to improving
the working and living the conditions of farm workers and the elimination
of human rights abuses in the tobacco supply chain. While we recognize that
the tobacco farm workers are not directly employed by RAI, your company
effectively controls pricing and procurement processes with its contract
growers. In that capacity, RAI has the power to facilitate needed changes
    in the fields.

As persons of faith we share in the mutual commitment of RAI and FLOC to
recognize the human rights of each farm worker and to provide safe and
acceptable working conditions. We also believe in the importance of mutual
dialogue where all parties work together to address common concerns and
where all have a seat at the table. In order to strengthen these
commitments, we call on Reynolds American Inc. to work with FLOC to develop
a written agreement establishing a process guaranteeing freedom of
association and collective bargaining for tobacco farm workers in the
Reynolds American supply chain. In this way, Reynolds American will affirm
the authentic voices of the tobacco farm workers, address common concerns,
identify and work toward eliminating abuses in the supply chain, and
ultimately improve the living and working conditions of tobacco farm
    workers.

We will contact you to confirm that you have received this letter, and to
learn what progress is being made toward reaching such an agreement.

We trust God's Spirit to lead to you forward in your discussions with FLOC
as you mutually discover ways to better the lives of thousands of farm
workers in the supply chain; and with hope for a better future for these
farm workers, we look to your leadership in these matters.

    Faithfully,

    - The Farm Labor Organizing Committee, AFL-CIO (FLOC) represents farm
workers who pick tobaccounder a collective bargaining agreement with the
North Carolina Growers Association (NCGA). FLOC is organizing to gain
representation for thousands of other tobacco farm workers in North
Carolina and the South. Since the settlement of the five year boycott of
the Mt. Olive Pickle Company, FLOC and the NCGA have had a collective
bargaining agreement, providing historic labor rights to 6,000 immigrant
farm workers employed with H2A guest worker visas who harvest cucumbers,
tobacco, sweet potatoes and other crops. FLOC also represents farm workers
in Michigan and Ohio, and its headquarters are based in Toledo, OH. Mr.
Baldemar Velasquez is the president of FLOC.

    - Reynolds American Inc. (RAI), based in Winston-Salem, NC, is one of
the largest tobacco companies in the United States. In 2011, Reynolds made
$1.4 billion in profits. Mr. Daniel Delen is President and CEO of the
Company with a 2011 pay package amounted to $8.5 million. RAI has a Board
of Directors comprised of 13 members. British American Tobacco (BAT) based
in London is RAI's largest shareholder and owns 42.05% of RAI. It also
nominates five members of the RAI Board of Directors.

    - Although Reynolds does not directly employ tobacco farm workers, by
contracting with tobacco growers, it influences standards which directly
affect the living and working conditions of tobacco farm workers, both
within its supply chain and even beyond.Through its contracts with
growers, Reynolds can affect the living and working conditions of tobacco
    farm workers.

    - Tobacco farm workers in the South are primarily from Mexico, and
suffer from disgraceful and inhumane working and living conditions. Many
work without legal documentation and are particularly vulnerable to
exploitation. The statistics speak for themselves: A North Carolina farm
worker earns, on average, only about one-third that of the federal poverty
level for a family of four. Half of farm worker households cannot afford to
adequately feed their families and more than one-third of housing for farm
workers on the East Coast is severely inadequate or unfit for human
habitation. Moreover, tobacco farm workers frequently suffer from acute
nicotine poisoning, or "green tobacco sickness," as well as heat stroke and
pesticide exposure. Green tobacco sickness is "a debilitating disease that
causes nausea, vomiting, dizziness and, in severe cases, dehydration,"
according to a March 23, 2009 article in The Wall Street Journal,
documenting the health hazards of tobacco farm workers.

    - A recent Oxfam America-FLOC report, "A state of fear: Human rights
abuses in North Carolina's tobacco industry," highlights the onerous
conditions workers face in the tobacco fields of North Carolina. (See the
full Oxfam America - FLOC report at www.floc.com)

    - On June 5, 2012, FLOC President Velasquez met with Mr. Martin Holman
III, RAI Executive Vice President and General Counsel, at FLOC headquarters
in Toledo, OH. FLOC has been requesting a meeting with RAI since October
2007, to discuss ways that Reynolds can work towards ensuring safer and
healthier conditions and the labor and human rights of tobacco farm workers
in the supply chain, but Reynolds had previouslyrefused to meet directly
    with FLOC.

    - This direct meeting with RAI came after years of campaigning and with
the support of individuals and groups across the US and globally. President
Velasquez had direct meetings with British American Tobacco, Reynolds
largest owner, in London, before FLOC met directly with RAI. (Please visit
www.floc.com to find out more about the campaign.) FLOC President
Velasquez reported that the discussions with RAI were positive. However,
the campaign to bring justice to the tobacco fields of the South is not
over until agreements are signed ensuring the basic rights of the workers.

Police: 7 dead in Wisconsin Sikh temple

    shooting 05 Aug 2012 A gunman opened

fire Sunday and killed six people at a Sikh temple near Milwaukee before he was

killed in an exchange of gunfire with one of the first officers to respond to

the chaotic scene, authorities said. The shootings happened before 10:30 am,

when witnesses said several dozen people were gathering at the Sikh Temple of

Wisconsin for a service. Hours of uncertainty followed as police in tactical

gear and carrying assault rifles surrounded the temple with armored vehicles and

ambulances. A crowd gathered outside as officers descended on the temple and

some spoke of talking or exchanging text messages with people inside. Some said

they had heard there were multiple shooters, others spoke of women and children

    held hostage.

    Gunman, six others dead at

Wisconsin Sikh temple 05 Aug 2012 At

least seven people, including a gunman shot by a police officer, have been

killed in an attack on worshippers at a Sikh temple in the Milwaukee suburb of

Oak Creek, Wisconsin, on Sunday, police said. The officer was wounded but

"returned fire, and that shooter was put down," said Bradley Wentlandt, the

police chief in nearby Greenfield, who briefed reporters. Investigators who

picked through the building afterward found four bodies inside the temple and

two other victims outside, plus the gunman, Wentlandt said. Though early reports had suggested there may have been

more than one attacker, he said officers had not identified any

    other gunmen.CLG needs your support.

    Hi Miguel

Just moments ago Marco Saavedra, Viridiana Martinez, Ally Ruiz and Daniel Alvarado were arrested in front of the Broward Detention Center. They were joined by over 25 families of detainees and we were all demanding an end to low-priority detentions and the release of people like Claudio Rojas. ICE wasn't taking us serious so we needed to show them that this community is no longer going to live in fear.

DONATE $25 TO THE UNDOCUMENTED BAIL FUND AND HELP US GET THEM OUT!

Marco and Viridiana were just released on Friday from the Broward Detention Center after they went undercover in an effort to infiltrate the detention center. Marco was detained inside of the Broward Detention Center for over 3-weeks and Viridiana just over 2-weeks. Both Marco and Viridiana participated in this action because they believe their friends from the detention center should also be released.

Stand up with Marco, Viridiana, Ally and Daniel and donate $25 to the Undocumented Bail Fund so we can get them released!

All four are now on their way to the Broward County Jail, from there ICE will have the choice whether to detain them or not. Regardless of what happens all four are ready to deal with it because they know they have you supporting them. Our goal is to raise at least $2,000 today, will you help us with the first $25, $75, or $250 donation so we can secure the release of our friends?

The detention center is now on lock-down, however we've made a pledge not to stop fighting and hope you'll join us. Stay tune for updates.

    Much love,

    Mohammad

PS Don't forget to sign the petition asking for ICE to review all of the cases out of the Broward detention center and to release all low-priority detainees!
