Last night at the Quaker meeting house, about 40 people met to listen to
various speakers (our Miguel was one of them) from the Hindu, Muslim,
Christian, and Native American traditions. We heard buddhist chants, poetry
and Apache drumming, all in the service of peace and nonproliferation of
weapons. Amazing how so many different people from so many paths could all
say the same thing: we are one people, we are God's children, we must care
for each other and for the planet. It was beautiful.
Why can't we bring it to life, to our lives, to America?

Penny, to answer you, I think we can bring our vision to life. To me, the question is "What stops us?" The Buddhists say what's stopping us is "ego grasping mind.". There were many strongly held beliefs represented there last night. Could our attachment to "our" belief be stopping is?
Is it possible to let go of our attachment to beliefs, allegiances, and opinions? Are you (am I) at any moment willing to give up all we have become for what could be?

If my beliefs lead me to tolerance and nonviolence how can I give them up? I don't identify with any one tradition__I can say I am a pane theist, God in all. I can't give that up.
Peace be with us!

Jim,
I thank you for coming last night to the Abolition 2020 event. Didn't see you leave. But continuing to ask more questions:
(1) Is it better to not believe in anything, neither war nor peace? Even moral atheists "believe" in doing good.
(2) Is it "attachment" to plainly believe or to have a legalistic belief system?
(3) If we don't seek alliances/friendships/cooperation, do we not just become individualistic, self-centered, or self-righteous?
(4) If we do not form healthy opinions (discernment), do we allow those with the strongest opinions to rule the rest of us with impunity?
(5) Are not the questions you posed (and that I pose here) opinions themselves, or absolute truths?
Just continuing the conversation.
Miguel

Thanks for sending Abhinav. I could not access the site earlier. I just found out that Fareed Zakaria had plagiarized someone elses article from The New Yorker. CNN removed the article and suspended Zakaria and his CNN show until further notice. This is ashame, because Zakaria is a smart and respected political analyst and writer. But he did not act wisely.
Here is the article from Jill Lepore that Zakaria plagiarized from:

Correction: Here is the article that Zakaria was accused of Plagiarizing. It is long but a good history of gun control in America.
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2012/04/23/120423fa_fact_lepore?currentPage=all
"One in three Americans knows someone who has been shot. As long as a
candid discussion of guns is impossible, unfettered debate about the
causes of violence is unimaginable. Gun-control advocates say the answer
to gun violence is fewer guns. Gun-rights advocates say that the answer
is more guns: things would have gone better, they suggest, if the
faculty at Columbine, Virginia Tech, and Chardon High School had been
armed. That is the logic of the concealed-carry movement; that is how
armed citizens have come to be patrolling the streets. That is not how
civilians live. When carrying a concealed weapon for self-defense is
understood not as a failure of civil society, to be mourned, but as an
act of citizenship, to be vaunted, there is little civilian life left." - Jill Lepore

Because of your interest in interfaith interaction and better understanding of all parts of our diverse community here in Central Florida, I thought you would be interested in two upcoming events at the Sikh gurdwara (temple). Please note the following:
1. If at all possible, come to a drop-in event this Sunday, August 12, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm (see attached flyer) and/or to an Interfaith Service on Thursday evening, August 16, at 7:00 pm (see attached announcement). Both events will be held at the Sikh gurdwara at 2527 West SR 426 (Aloma Avenue), Oviedo, FL 32765.
2. Please tell others by word of mouth, by forwarding this email or by posting the attached flyer and announcement on any bulletin boards where it would be appropriate to do so.
Thanks to all of you for your support for the Sikh community in their time of sorrow and deep concern and for setting an example as we seek to ensure that our diverse Central Florida community is a model of care and concern for everyone.
