All are welcome to this free event!
This ceremony is organized by the Quakers of Orlando and will be held from 6:30 to 8:00pm at the Quaker Meeting House at 316 East Marks Street.
Sixty-eight years later, on August 6th, members of six Orlando organizations will gather for two reasons. The first reason is to remember those who died in the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The second is to honor to call by Mayors for Peace for a world free of nuclear weapons by the year 2020 as part of their "2020 Vision Campaign."
In August 1945, atomic bombs landed in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing an estimated 246,000 people. Six months later, on January 24, 1946, the United Nations used its first resolution "for control of atomic energy to the extent necessary to ensure its use only for peaceful purposes" and "for the elimination from national armaments of atomic weapons and of all other major weapons adaptable to mass destruction."
The featured guest will be Medecine Man Joe Iron Eagle, a Chiricahua-Apache, who will discuss the impact of nuclear weapons on Native Americans. Also featured will be Irene Zabytko, author of "The Sky Unwashed" and producer of "Life in the Dead Zone: a Chornobyl Documentary." She will discuss her work-in-progress documentary trailer, "One Sky."
In addition to the Quakers and Peace Builders and Justice of Florida, in attendance will be members from Mayors for Peace, Soka Gokkai, The Global Peace Network, Amnesty International, and the United Nations Association.
