Re: {PBJFlorida} The value of community

Thanks to all three of you for this thought provoking series of ideas. (Don't you sleep?) It made me think about raising my five children in Colombia. They were very competitive! It's called sibling rivalry. Did we the parents create that? Or the natural desire to have the parent's attention? Or could it be an animal instinct? I've seen it in litters of puppies and pigs.
Was it/is it cultural? When I read about the African story and Ubuntu I thought that US culture is inherently competitive but then so is Colombian and Hispanic.

So there is a lot to think about here and what is as important or more, how can we stop this and simply join hands. Thanks for so much to think about.
Namaste! Penny

Re: {PBJFlorida} The value of community

Wow, Jim, thank you for that - it's beautiful and inspiring and the questions you posed in your second response are questions I struggle with myself. It's so hard to undue the damage our society has done to us, not only as an individuals, but as a collective. Sometimes I think children are our only hope because I also believe they are naturally empathetic and it just needs to continue to be nurtured into adulthood. Like in this story, those children have obviously learned about Ubuntu since birth, so therefore it is ingrained in them, it is part of their cultural ethos that is needed for their survival. How do we incorporate that in our society? Where do we start? School is a good start, but it's something that families and all of society needs to embrace. I've been racking my brain about that lately because I know it's the line of work I want to pursue, but just don't know where to start. I follow an emotional intelligence group for kids in Australia that has a program and they do wonderful things, but in our education system here there's no room for this type of education because it's so focused on academics. My only hope is that it is evolving and our society will realize that this is what is necessary for survival.

BTW, I know I've been MIA, sorry about that - miss y'all!

Re: {PBJFlorida} The value of community

Richard (and all),
Thank you RP. What great example of opening up.
I'm curious: What difference do you notice in how people interact with others and with themselves after? AND What's next in the process after the discovery of how competitive we have become?

For me this runs deeper than I thought. I have been meeting with a weekly self-discovery group of about 8 months now. I am really discovering how competitive and judgmental and opinionated I have become, not only with others but with myself. I can be very critical and hard on myself and I suspect I am not alone in that. I suspect also that for a change to happen, I will need to start by really reconnecting with myself and others. This, for me, is the heart of peace building work; but Where do I (where do we) start?

So I am now wondering what's next in this quest? How do i (we) break out of this? How do I (we) get back the real connectedness I (we) once experienced with myself (ourselves) and others?

BTW I don't think that "competitive and judgmental and separate" is our natural state. We learn to be this way. What do you think?

Yes, a very good film, and I always support Nina's film festival--BUT it starts at 10:00 downtown. Yikes!
I'll wait for the regualr sessions at Rollins. There might also be a showing at Valencia.

RE: {PBJFlorida} FW: Joan Chittister's address

Louise,

I wanted to tell you for a while how much the address from Sister Joan meant to me. It's one of the best commencement addresses I have ever read/heard. Thank you so much for sending!

Hi, Judy.  Have you read Joan C's address to Stanrford.  She applies the "call" to rebel to the students but every bit of it could be said to us as religious and lay members of church.  Fires me up!  Just in case you haven't read it, I am forwarding Ann T's email to which it is attached.

Re: {PBJFlorida} Bill Moyers Interviews Chris Hedges

A wake up call indeed -
YET, as I think about that statement, I am thinking how I feel when the alarm goes off on Mondays and I hit the snooze button two or three or four times wishing for a snow day so I can pull up the covers and go back to sleep.  Yet on Saturdays I am up and out the door before the alarm.  Why is this?  What can we learn from Saturdays?

I think we just need fewer work days and more Saturdays in each week (some creative way to come out from under the despair long enough to collectively create new possibilities).  When we spend so much time in despair and so little time creating, despair wins. Can we wake up to this reality?
