FADP Update
BULLETIN !!! Fighting Back in Jax
The Justice for Jacksonville Coalition is kicking off our campaign on Thursday, June 20 from 6pm to 8pm at the University of North Florida's Student Union. Building 58E, Ballroom 3703, Parking in lot 18.
"Justice for Jacksonville is a coalition united to eliminate the extreme and disproportionate use of death sentencing in Florida's 4th Judicial Circuit"
The Justice for Jacksonville Coalition has been more than a year in the making. This is our campaign kickoff. Faith groups, ACLU of Florida, FADP, NCADP, Amnesty International, and others have come together with local groups and citizens in a struggle to reduce the flagrantly disproportionate and extreme use of the Death Penalty in Florida's 4th Judicial Circuit (Duval, Nassau, and Clay counties). In 2012 Duval County ranked second in the nation for highest number of new death sentences. 80% (12 of 15) of those sentenced to death in Duval County during 2009 – 2012 were African American. In 2011 Duval County sentenced 5 people to death – all 5 were African Americans.
Although the 4th Judicial Circuit comprises just 6% of Florida's population, in 2010 and 2011 the 4th Judicial Circuit accounted for almost half of all new Florida sentences of death. In 2012 it accounted for 1 out of every 4 new death sentences in our state.
The situation is extreme and unconscionable and cannot be suffered to continue.
Please join us for the premier event. Find out what you can do.
Speakers will be introduced by Carlos Ramos, Director of the ACLU of Florida's NE Florida office in Jacksonville and Natishia Stevens, ACLU of Florida Field Organizer. Speakers include:
Sara Flynn – Jacksonville Mitigation Specialist
Rosemary Harris Lytle – Murder Victims' Families for Reconciliation
Mark Elliott – Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty
Rosemary Sopp – Jacksonville Area Criminal Trial Attorney
Please join us in this important and vital endeavor for all Floridians.

Dear Alicia,
As I write this message to you, an Israeli checkpoint is fading into the distance behind me. In the past three days, I've been traveling between Israel and the occupied West Bank, learning about human rights conditions on the ground.
When I fly back to the United States, it will be with deeper insight into the experience of human rights defenders and activists in Israel and the occupied West Bank. Yet before I leave, there are three people who I know I won't get a chance to meet: Azza, Suhair and Loujain.
They are three Palestinian women blocked from attending the university of their choice. Why? Because it is located in the occupied West Bank. They live in Gaza - where an ongoing Israeli blockade imposes severe restrictions on freedom of movement and other human rights. Students are not allowed to pursue nearby programs in the West Bank, home to over 2.5 million fellow Palestinians.
<http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=bsJSI9MNJiKRJ1PQH&s=ceLPLTNnFaINKSOpGlF&m=9dIBKHMkHeLHKUJ> Please help me shine a light on this injustice while I'm here in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Tell Israeli officials to stop preventing Palestinian students in Gaza from studying where they choose.
Since 2000, Israel's blockade on education has prevented thousands of Palestinian students in Gaza from pursuing higher education in the nearby West Bank - no more than 60 miles away. This, despite the fact that both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are all recognized as the Occupied Palestinian Territories -- one single territorial unit.
The Israeli military has cut the two apart.
Imagine all of the bright minds who were denied a better tomorrow because Israeli officials decided to collectively punish the entire population of Gaza - 1.6 million people. It's not just wrong, this is illegal under international law. <http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=evLYJiNZLlJXLbO3F&s=ceLPLTNnFaINKSOpGlF&m=9dIBKHMkHeLHKUJ> Help Palestinian students fully access education now!
The blockade has also crippled the Gaza economy, preventing many people from accessing jobs or the professional education or opportunities for development they need in order to thrive. As a result, massive numbers of Palestinians now live in a state of permanent unemployment. Around 80% depend on humanitarian aid.
The futures of students like Azza, Suhair and Loujain are severely limited, with dreams often put on pause indefinitely. Gaza desperately needs their talents. These students want the freedom to decide their own fate. We must fight for them to do exactly that.
While I'm here, I'll be meeting with a number of officials. You can help me amplify the stories of Azza, Suhair and Loujain - <http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=7oIKJXOxGeIJJRNCH&s=ceLPLTNnFaINKSOpGlF&m=9dIBKHMkHeLHKUJ> take action now to urge Israel to stop denying rights to students.
I may not be able to meet with Azza, Suhair and Loujain before I leave Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, but you can help these women and others pursue a better tomorrow by supporting their access to education and human rights today.
Thank you for all you do to support human rights around the world.

We have exciting news: dining workers at California State University, East
Bay are now members of UNITE HERE Local 2850! After an exciting spring of
organizing, speaking out and building campus support, the 31 workers won
union recognition on June 16th.
"I can't hide the excitement – I feel like I'm starting a whole new job,"
said six-year CSU-EB worker and organizing committee member Tatiana Lam. "I
was waiting for this for so long. Now I feel like our voices will heard."
"The best part of all this was seeing the workers take charge," said
Veronica Garcia, a fourth-year student at CSU-EB. "It was so inspiring to
see them stand up for themselves, and see all the students stand behind
them."
The workers, employees of Aramark, cook and serve food for CSU-EB's 13,000
students. They join the dining workers at St. Mary's College in Moraga, who
organized into UNITE HERE 2850 earlier this spring, as well as hundreds of
Aramark workers at the Oakland Coliseum and local cafeterias.

Hey all! Please call the Members of Congress on the House Judiciary
Committee, especially if they represent your district. (lis is below) and
tell them to OPPOSE the Goodlatte "Agricultural Guestworker Act," H.R.
1773. On Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee will hold a "mark up" to
debate, amend and probably vote on H.R. 1773. Rep. Goodlatte (R.-Va.)
chairs the Judiciary Committee; his bill's cosponsors include Rep. Gowdy
(R-SC) chair of the immigration subcommittee.
This bill would establish a new H-2C agricultural guestworker program that
would lower farmworkers' wages, eliminate labor protections that have
existed for decades under the H-2A and Bracero programs, minimize
government oversight, allow displacement of US farmworkers and exploitation
of vulnerable guestworkers, and deprive farmworkers of meaningful access to
the justice system.
The bill would not allow undocumented farmworkers in the United States, or
their family members, to earn green cards or the opportunity for
citizenship. It does not fix our broken immigration system; it would make
it far worse.
This anti-worker, anti-immigrant bill is inconsistent with the approach
taken by the Senate "Gang of Eight" in the tough but acceptable
labor-management compromise on agricultural workers in the bipartisan
immigration proposal, S.744. Read the Farmworker Justice legislative
analysis of the Goodlatte Agricultural Guestworker Act at our website page
