To continue the conversation we touched on at Valencia today, the conference I attended in Washington was organized by Common Cause and the Brennan Center for Justice. The purpose of the conference was to launch a nationwide voter protection project. In attendance were people from organizations around the country who now are meant to launch the plan on a local level.
The key component of the plan is to have voter protection teams trained and in place in every precinct in Seminole, Orange, and Osceola counties by the time Early Voting begins. The only way this happens is if a good recruitment effort begins soon - as in, now!
The deadline for new voter registration is Tuesday, October 9th, so time is running our quickly.
This year's election could be the worst ever. Funded by belligerent billionaires, organized groups will pour into Central Florida like locusts, but instead of eating crops and blotting out the sun, their intent will be to keep select people from voting. Our job is to protect those voters. Our job is to see that every person who enters a polling place to cast a ballot does so safely and comfortably.
I'm writing to invite you to join an important team of people – the team of people who will protect voters in Orange, Seminole, and Osceola counties. Democracy only works when we exercise our right to vote and when we protect the right of others to do the same.
To join the team of people who will prevent attempts to confuse and intimidate voters in our precincts, contact the Metro-Orlando Voter Protection Project.
