{PBJFlorida} Fwd: Victory? Judge Orders Workplace Protections Back on the Ballot

BREAKING!
Judge orders County Commission to place earned sick days on ballot

Today a three judge panel ordered the Orange County Commission to place a measure on the ballot that would allow workers, including domestic partners, to earn sick time. This is the second time the commission's action have been struck down but it appears they plan to ignore the court again by running out the clock until the measure can't appear on the ballot.

The Earned Sick Time initiative would provide 1 hour for every 37 hours worked of earned sick time for full-time, year round employees rather than force people to come to work ill or send their children to school while contagious. It is especially important to LGBT families because it allows domestic partners, who might not otherwise be recognized, those same rights.

In an effort to block the measure, commissioners even considered a move that threatened to undo already secured anti-discrimination employment protections for all minorities including LGBT workers. Commissioner Jennifer Thompson withdrew her amendment but we need to let the Commission know we're watching.

TAKE ACTION: Email the Orange County Commission and tell them to follow the law and place the measure on the ballot for November.  Tell them no more tricks, no more games.

SHOW UP: Tell the County Commission to place earned sick time on the ballot and not to threaten pro-LGBT policies.

WHAT: Orange County Commission Meeting
WHEN: Tuesday, September 18 at 8:30am
WHERE: County Administrative Center, 201 S Rosalind Ave, Orlando, FL 32801
