Re: {PBJFlorida} Digest for pbjflorida@googlegroups.com - 3 Messages in 3 Topics

AA brothers and sisters for peace and community - my apologies not making it Saturday, my other half has to be out of his house this weekend and we are no where close. I read the info on the farm workers, though, and pray Brown signs it. Even if they do not get all the inspections they want, it is a step in the right direction. I grew up during the days of Caesar Chavez and truly respected him, we had migrant workers that always worked our orchards during harvest, and my parents always paid them well and fixed them meals and we could not have survived without them, they were respected members of our farm.  It is appalling in this day and age that workers can not even get water in over 100 degree temps.

I can tell you from growing up farming that the 8 hour rule will never pass.  That is not the schedule farming works on, especially field crops. They do need to do something fairer than what is done, however, that is not disputable, but trying to put farming into a cubie schedule is not realistic.  Calves do not wait til the next shift to be born and neither does ripening produce.  Increasing piece work minimums, etc. would be greatly helpful, and BANNING child labor, period, and mandating child care and head start, etc. in those situations needs to be done!

Also, Jim, loved the comments yesterday or day before (I have gone back to work and 17-18 hr days this week are killing me already...)about community. I grew up in an old world community, and while certainly not perfect, it was closer than anything I have seen elsewhere in the US to what you talked about. My other half is from the high Atlas in Morocco, and he still is very much "village" mentality in many things, and my, are there differences. We truly could learn a lot from a "village".

    *http://action.ufw.org/heatsafety* <http://action.ufw.org/heatfb>

We have good news and bad news to share with you regarding the California
    Assembly votes last week.

The good news is the two critical UFW Heat Safety bills have passed the
Assembly and are now on California Governor Brown's desk.* AB 2346
(Butler), The Farm Worker Safety Act of 2012, will allow farm workers to
sue employers who repeatedly fail to comply with mandatory requirements for
shade and drinking water.* It would make growers and the farm labor
contractors they hire jointly liable if contractors fail to supply farm
workers with shade and water under California's hot summer sun.

*AB 2676 (Calderon), the Humane Treatment of Farm Workers Act, says
agricultural employers must treat farm workers at least as well as animals,
by providing shade and water or face the same criminal
penalties--punishable by jail time and fines.*

On the other hand, the California Assembly rejected AB 1313 (Allen). The
measure would have given farm workers the right to receive overtime pay for
working more than eight hours in a day or 40 hours in a week. Sadly, 16
Democrats chose not to vote on this critical bill leaving it to die on the
floor and two Democrats even voted against it. One wonders how many of them
gave speeches about workers' rights this past Labor Day weekend.

*This pretense of support serves to remind us how critical it is for each
and every one of us to send CA Governor Jerry Brown a message
today<http://action.ufw.org/heatfb>asking him to sign these lifesaving
    bills.
    * *We can't assume he will sign the bills. We have to remind decision
    makers what is at stake.*

Farm worker lives rely on these bills because the state just doesn't have
the resources to adequately enforce its heat standards. According to an
August 22, 2012, editorial in the Desert Sun, "Last year only 1,090 heat
inspections were conducted on California's 81,500 farms. At that rate, many
    violations could go unnoticed."

*Since California issued its 2005 regulations to keep farm workers from
dying of extreme heat, preventable farm worker deaths have continued to
occur at a similar pace.* In most of these cases where a farm worker has
died, the employer deprived the farm workers of adequate water and shade
multiple times. This summer, state regulators are again investigating two
    possible heat-related farm worker deaths.

*Let's all do our part in saving farm worker lives. Could you please send a
message to Governor Brown today <http://action.ufw.org/heatfb> and request
that he sign AB 2346 and AB 2676 into law?*

Again, thank you and Si Se Puede!

About the Theme: What is Neuroscience of Yoga? How is it beneficial? For whom? Why explore an ancient Hindu Tradition from Modern medical perspective? - These are some of the questions that will be explored in this special invited lecture by Dr.Deshmukh.
Yoga-sutra is a classic text of about 200 formulae in four chapters, by Patanjali (circa 200 B.C.E) on the topic of philosophy and practice of Yoga. Yoga practice guidance is for two goals: a) living a healthy stress free life (Klesha tanukarana) b) to realize an intuitive, selfless, holistic consciousness (Samadhi bhavana). The eight steps guidance ashtanga yoga provides the detailed instruction. An associated deliberation here is about Kundalini shakti – a mystic energy rising and descending in the yogi's body. The physiological imprints of Kundalini awakening have been explored in many ways in medical sciences and yoga-traditions. There is considerable symbolism in these descriptions resulting in misunderstanding, speculation and mysticism. In this lecture, the speaker brings out the neuro-scientific understanding of many aspects of Ashtanga Yoga and Kundalini- chakras –meditation based on modern neuro-anatomy, advanced brain imaging, neurophysiology and cognitive neurosciences. The speaker puts forth new hypotheses for exploratory interdisciplinary -understanding and research with a perceived benefit of practice in the field of medicine and yoga.
