Monsanto and GMOs: Threats To Food in Mexico and Beyond, and Worldwide Resistance Dear Lariza, Did you know that corn was first domesticated in Mexico? It makes perfect sense considering the hundreds of corn varieties in that area, as well as the cultural and spiritual significane that corn has had in Mexico. But corn in Mexico is no longer what it once was. Companies like Monsanto are threatening the biological diversity of corn and the livelihood of thousands of small-scale farmers in Mexico. Read our blog to learn more about the impact of GMOs and Monsanto in the United States and Mexico. Mexicans are organizing to protect native corn from GMOs. On April 26th-27th, organizations gathered in Oaxaca for two days for the pre-trial hearing of the "Permanent People's Tribunal" regarding "GMO contamination of Native Corn." Today more than 400 protests against Monsanto and GMOs will be taking place in 49 countries. As people concerned about justice, we have the responsibility to think about how these issues affect us locally, and about global impacts of U.S. corporations like Monsanto.
