{PBJFlorida} Happy New from Chapter 519!!

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays with their family and friends.  As we are coming close to the end of another year, let’s remember what we’ve done over the past 12 months…..

·        We tabled at the Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Event at Lake Eola.

·        Attended the Amnesty International Annual General Meeting in Washington DC, where our local group received an Honorable Mention for the Hironoka Award.

·        Participated in Earth Day at Lake Eola.

·        Screened the Documentary "Call + Response" about the horrors of human trafficking.

·        Screened the Documentary "Occupation 101" about the ongoing Israel/Palestinian conflict.

·        Hosted a statewide Leadership meeting with our Field Organizer, Ebony Brickhouse.

·        Tabled two nights for Rhythm N’ Rights for Paul McCarthy!!

·        Wrote letters to detainees in Gitmo for International Day Against Torture 6/26.

·        Rented a van to take members to Strake, FL to attend a vigil for John Ferguson outside the state prison.

·        Participated in Macy’s Shop for a Cause event.

·        Helped to kick off the Annual Global Peace Film Festival with the screening of “70x7 The Forgiveness Equation” about the death penalty and forgiveness.

·        Co Hosted the Troy Davis Remembrance event at FAMU Law School in Downtown Orlando with FADP and the ACLU and brought Herman Lindsey, Florida’s 23rd exonerated prisoner, to Central Florida.

·        Along with Floridians to Alternative to the Death Penalty (FADP), did a statewide tour with Juan Melendez, Florida’s 20th exonerated prisoner.

·        Attended the Amnesty International Regional Conference in Atlanta, GA.

·        Hosted the First Annual Friday Night Fish Fry for Fair Justice in Florida, with SueZann Bosler (a murder victim family member), Mark Elliot (Executive Director of FADP) and Juan Melendez.

·        And last but not least…hosted the Annual Global Write A Thon at our December meeting.

WHEW!!  That’s a lot!!  All of that is in addition to our monthly meetings and the hundreds of letters our members have wrote and mailed out during the year.  We love the work we do but it all cost money.  Last year, we were able to accomplish all of what we did with generous donations made during our Write A Thon fundraiser at the end of 2012.  We are hoping that the 2013 Write A Thon will generate just as much funding in order to support our work for 2014.  Unfortunately, this year we have only received a fraction of what this fundraiser has produced in the past.  If you have not already donated, please consider making a donation.  You can mail a check (or stamps which is one of our primary expenses) to…

PO Box 533855

Orlando, FL 32835

Or

Go to our local webpage and make a secure donation with a credit card.  Just go to www.AmnestyOrlando.org and click “donate” at the top of the page.  Please remember, all donations are tax deductable and you will receive a receipt in the mail for your donation.  Also, all donations collected by the Orlando Chapter 519 stays with the chapter in order to continue our work in and around the Orlando area.

Thank you all for the support you give.  I look forward to working with everyone in 2014!!!

Peace,
