> Saunders says voters are primarily concerned with jobs and education and "just want to know the game isn't rigged" in Tallahassee, which has been controlled by Republican super-majorities for the past two years. He says that while progressives are excited about the possibility of electing the first openly gay lawmaker, the district at large has broader concerns he is focused on.
> "I think it's a district that has such diversity in ethnicity and backgrounds and income levels," Saunders said. "It's a seat that wants to be represented by someone who can bring people together and solve problems."
> Saunders will face fellow Democrat Shayan Elahi, 40, a lawyer who represented Occupy Orlando protesters and the Food Not Bombs organizers arrested for feeding the homeless in Eola Park.
> Elahi is battling against some of the Democratic Party's traditional donor bases, but says he's more qualified for the job based on his experience – not just as a civil rights lawyer, but also working for Walt Disney Internet Group and Universal Music Group in California.
> "I'm the only Democratic candidate who lives in the district," Elahi said. Saunders said he recently moved in with his twin brother who lives near the UCF campus.
> Elahi called Saunders "a recent graduate who has basically been a single-issue fundraiser and advocate," referring to his work for Equality Florida, as well as campaign work he did for another gay-rights campaign in Gainesville and as field director working against the same-sex marriage constitutional ban voters adopted in 2008.
