Michael Nagler says, if we don't check our violence toward nature and address the epidemic crisis of meaning, "we may not have an earth to tread much longer..."

A Series on Gandhi: Free Download in Celebration of Gandhi's Birthday!
The Metta Center is currently working on a three-disc (30 MP3) series on the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. Each MP3 is approximately 5-6 minutes in length, and is designed for those learning for the first time about Gandhi as well as those who want to explore the deeper aspects of his legacy. The entire collection is scheduled to be finished in mid-November and will be available for purchase--individually and as a collection-- on our website (all funds support programs of the Metta Center). In celebration of Gandhi's birthday, and in fulfillment of our mission, we offer the following free preview, appropriately entitled for October 2, On the "Spinning Wheel Birthday". Click here to listen! | | | What Gandhi Means to Meby Michael Nagler I happen to be an unabashed admirer of Gandhi; indeed 'admirer' may be too weak a term. My spiritual teacher once said in my presence (and I suspect for my benefit), "That man came back from South Africa having realized God and quietly set about solving every problem of the modern world." Wow. This is not for one moment to detract from any of the great souls who followed in his wake — Martin Luther King, Aung San Suu Kyi, Cesar Chavez,— it would be a delight to list them all if we had time. But who else had the opportunity to explore nonviolence in every walk of life, as he said "personal, social, and political," for fifty years, "reducing it to a science"? Who else had the opportunity to play such a pivotal role in human evolution, turning the clock forward so fast that it left old fashioned colonialism — and with it the idea of might makes right — into the dustbin of history?
Einstein famously said that "generations to come, it may be, will scarce believe that such a one as this trod the earth in flesh and blood." He was too right; many in our generation indeed can scarce believe the legacy he pioneered for us. Metta's job is to help people believe it. Frankly, we may not have an earth to tread much longer if we do not. (Michael Nagler is Professor Emeritus U.C. Berkeley and Metta Center co-founder and President.) | | | PS: Bay Area friends can hear Michael Nagler and Stephanie Van Hook (Metta's director) discuss Gandhi's legacy on KWMR Point Reyes at 5:30 pm on October 2nd. Happy Spinning Wheel Birthday! | | |
