So, where do we go next? Looks like the Tea Party is quickly fading into obscurity. Gabby Gifford bravely faced her assailant yesterday to move forward. We alhamdu'Allah have health care and a President who will not tolerate Muslims getting treated like the enemy, and cares about education and the future of our young people. Regardless of the negativity barkers the economy is slowly and steady in a healthy manner improving, housing starts are up, unemployment is coming down, and things overall are waaayyy better than four years ago. How do we start revamping the negativity, hate, that has been running this country? [When we thought apathy was horrible, did we ever get an answer - not the one we wanted - to the pleas for change.] How do we take the down-in-the-mouth and turn it into positive energy to help move the train forward?

Thanks for sharing Penny. I think most of us, if not all of us, are relieved with the outcome. The results spoke loud and clear.
Now that he has a few years inside experience with Washington's bureaucracy, I hope that president Obama will have more back bone in the next term. I am still hopeful for a public option and a universal healthcare system that would cover every resident of the US.
I am glad that corporations, although they are officially considered as persons, can not physically vote.
There are many things to be happy about in the wake of the working class victory. I would like to indulge in mentioning one that is close to my heart. I think more Americans are rejecting bigotry, hate, and special interest and proving that super-pacs, hate-mongers and their monie$ can not win elections. I am happy that main stream law abiding Muslims won't be openly called the "enemy" in the House floor for at least the next two years.

Miguel, thank you for your comments on the Chris Hedges article. I, too, took some offense. I, too, am far happier that Obama got elected again. I know too much about business and social beliefs on the other side. My biggest concern was larger than yours, I was so afraid that the only reason Romney wanted elected so badly was to play world god for financial gain.
It is a sad commentary that society and the media has put such unreachable and unrealistic, in some cases, standards on the office of President. Obama has had to make some difficult decisions as Commander-in-Chief. That position requires him to pick the lesser evil often, and that often includes putting people in danger. Those people, may I remind you, Volunteered. They were not drafted. He also has done a lot of good in trying to make a steady, even keeled approach to trying to turn this hugenormous ship in a different direction and a steady power forward.
As I texted to some of my Muslim friends, who, incidentally were torn between moral values but knowing that Romney was highly threatening to their very existence -

I have stayed mostly silent but today is a very important day. I think Chris
Hedges is brilliant, caring, a scholar and a gentleman, but here I slightly
disagree with his latest article. We can vote today for anyone else, but
it's going to be Romney or Obama that will be president for the next four
years. We keep saying that we have no alternative but to choose the lesser
of two evils. Well, name me a president that was a saint. In fact, no one I
know is a saint - and put into a position of great power, I wonder how we
would be able to hold on to our sanity.
It's true that many people have died under Obama. Over half a million
Americans died under Lincoln. Japanese Americans were put in concentration
camps under Franklin Roosevelt's Administration. The Vietnam War raged under
both Johnson and Nixon. Chris Hedges may be looking for a Messiah. He or she
ain't coming as a US president. "We the people" had our chance to turn
things around for the better with the Occupy movement, but we blew it. We
have few alternatives. And no, Obama and Romney are not the same. Yes, they
both cater to business interests, but the philosophies are different. Obama
wants to make business work for the people and Romney or the current
Republican party wants business to rule people. I don't believe that
corporations will ever be an overall force for good but at least climate
change under Obama has a better chance of being mitigated. Women's rights,
Muslim rights, Immigrant human rights, gay rights, and health care,
Education, and the Arts for all have more of a change of surviving (at least
a while longer) under an Obama administration. There is also a chance that
there will be less wars in an Obama administration. There is some breathing
room for us if he stays in power.
Obama has tried to keep things under control. In doing so, he has had to
make very hard decisions, involving our own private rights and life and
death decisions of non-Americans. He has made mistakes, big ones. But with
so much to deal with, no mortal human being can be expected to be perfect or
even good. He did what he could with the mess he inherited. And it was a
huge mess that may never be fully corrected.
Unless "we the people" are willing to do what it takes to take the streets
and stand up for our beliefs of fairness, cooperation, and community no
matter what the repercussions, we will be left with few choices in
leadership. And that tells more about "us" than either Obama or Romney. But
Obama could have been much worse. He could have been the continuation of the
previous administration. He was not. And for that alone, I will vote for him
again.

We can not thank you enough for your support. It is so amazing to see
so many people come together to help with Sandy Relief. This is a
critical time to help as the media moves to cover other events there
will be a danger that the ongoing emergency will fade. We saw this after
Katrina. Please consider becoming a long term Food Not Bombs volunteer
helping with our groups on Staten Island, Brooklyn, Long Island and
Manhattan. Our volunteers are preparing huge amounts of food but the
need is so great we could use more donations and help. There will be
many hungry and cold people struggling for many more months so your help
is urgently needed.
We will be moving our Brooklyn kitchen to the YWCA at 30 Third Avenue
at Atlantic this Saturday and Sunday. Please meet at 9:00 AM. We need
volunteers to do many tasks including cooking, driving and providing
help with the clean up.
We still need spices, snacks, rice, pasta, spices peanut butter, bread,
plasticware, plates, trays and baby items. We could use drivers to help
collect and deliver food in every area.
If you do not live in the New York area it is best to organize benefit
concerts or other fundraising events to raise money. The cost of
seeking housing and driving food into the city from far away is not very
efficient. It is also not easy to house people since there are already
over 40,000 additional homeless people as a result of Sandy. Everyone is
so touched by your willingness to leave home to help but as you can see
that would not be wise at this time.
If you do not live near the area ravaged by Sandy you may want to
contact your local Food Not Bombs group to find out how they are
organizing in your community. Many times so much aid is diverted to
major disasters like Sandy that it has a huge impact on local programs
where hundreds of people are already struggling to survive. If you have
trouble finding your local Food Not Bombs chapter you can email us at
menu@foodnotbombs.net or call 1-800-884-1136. You are also welcome to
start a Food Not Bombs chapter in your community. We have materials on
line to help you start.
