Interesting article indeed. However, it does not make any sense to me. It is a hodgepodge of widely well-known and disseminated proposals made by islamophobes and their peons for the last 2 decades.
I have followed Ayaan Hirsi Ali for the last decade. While I sympathize with her plight growing up in a dysfunctional family, and in a war ravaged country I have clearly seen from her debates, articles, and book$ that she understands Islam from a single story: From her family, from negative role models and from deluded caretakers. She is not a scholar or an expert on the subject. I have heard heard grossly misinterpret religious scripture and make disparaging comments on major scholars from centuries past that she has not studied at any level of depth of seriousness.
Moreover, her arguments are flawed and take precedents and inspiration in Western theological movements that have no resemblance to Islamic philosophy and reformation theology.
In my opinion she is ill-informed and has succumbed to a noxious islamophobic industry where she has made beaucoup $$$ and through which she sadly lost any credibility with western Muslims. Most Muslim scholars agree that reformation is built in the fabric of Islam and can historically prove it (each century or so had a major renovator- not to be confused with innovator.) The sacred texts and pre-texts are open to new age appropriate readings and interpretations and there is enough flexibility in Islamic jurisprudence to contain a large body of legal opinions. What is truly needed is a return to Islam, not the one that Ayaan Hirsi calls disparagingly "war like conduct" but the one that was practiced by the prophets (from Adam to Muhamad going through Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, etc.) The Muslims who I know to grow to be more Muslim tend to be more compassionate, kind, and beneficial to society. They never "condone violence" as Ayaan Hirsi claims and they are not mistakenly called "moderate" as she asserts in her article. From my personal experience, I can attest that they are the epitome of moderation and common sense.
After reading this article I may argue that it is the whole world that needs a reformation not only a single religion per se. A world that keeps watching, unmoved, as man less drones wreak havoc in remote villages. A world where torture is allowed even in the most prosperous and democratic of nations. A world where values based morality is possible only when it is in tune with economic and political interests. A world where familicides, rapes, and bigotry are daily occurrences.
After all when some ill-informed Muslims or the ones who claim to be Muslims do an act of ignorance it is not Islam to be blamed there are a whole host of issues that are nuanced enough to warrant serious, courageous and honest studies to get to the bottom of.
With Peace and Love,
Yassine
